What would Freud say?

Bennington Battle Monument, Bennington VT

iSquangle took a short trip to the Bennington Battle Monument Friday afternoon, just as the snow started falling. The 306-foot tall obelisk commemorates the Battle of Bennington, which actually took place across the border in New York on August 17, 1777.

"They are ours, or this night Molly Stark sleeps a widow!" -Gen. John Stark.

General John Stark, with 1,400 New Hampshire volunteers as well as volunteers gathered in Vermont towns along what is now known as the Molly Stark Trail (VT Route 9), sucessfully defeated two detachments of British General John Burgoyne's army. The British goal was a store of weapons and supplies kept at the site of the monument.

A fitting image for Super Bowl weekend! Now, for a bowl of that special half-time chili con carne...

Chris,
Dad and I went up and checked out the monument on Friday. I hadn't been there since I was in grade school.
Dad said he and Tommy Szucharewski went there in Tommy's '38 Ford one time. There's a circular drive around the monument, and they drove around it fast enough to get the tires squealing - until a police officer stopped them for a bit of a lecture.

Although most of the soldiers at the Battle of Bennington were Vermont and New Hampshire residents, some came from even further away. One of my ancestors who fought there came with a group of soldiers from a coastal Massachusetts town.
